Kathie's path to this work was not linear, and that is the point. Before the licensure, before the practice, before the clinical training, she was a federal law enforcement officer at the supervisory level. She has held composure in rooms most clinicians have only read about. She has stayed regulated under conditions that demand it. When she tells a client that emotional regulation can be learned, she is speaking from a kind of formation that does not come from a textbook. She is Hawaiian, and it shows up everywhere. The markings she wears that honor her ancestors, the pua kenikeni tucked behind her ear, her high school ring that says "Imua" and "E ho'omau" (The battle cry- Forward!, Keep going!, and Persevere!), the Hawaiian bracelets she wears that say "Ha'aheo" and "Makuahine." Haʿaheo: proud, dignified, carrying herself with grace, and standing strong in her identity. Makuahine: mother. Her clinical work is rooted in pilina (deep relational connection), pono (righteousness, integrity and balance), and aloha (relating to others with love and respect, kindness, and empathy).
